Abstract:

Management of risk factors (RF) that covers both risk control and mitigation is the most effective prevention of cardi-ovascular diseases (CVD).

The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence of CVD RF and potential effectiveness of preventive activities aimed at mitigating cardiovascular risks (CVR) among working age males.

We examined 152 working age males aged 45.0 (39.0; 50.0) years. The total group was divided into four subgroups depending on the number of RF: smoking, elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP), and dyslipidemia. CVR and potential effects gained by RF correction were calculated using the LIFE-CVD2 risk model.

We established high RF prevalence in the total group: 38.8 % of the participants smoked, 67.8 % had fat metabolism disorders, 26.9 % had elevated SBP and more than 70 % had dyslipidemia. Inter-group variability between Groups 1 and 4 was established for CVR itself, a potential decline in it due to therapy, as well as for the number of people who should undergo some interventions to prevent a cardiovascular event (NNT). High CVR value is directly proportionate to the number of added years of life and is inversely proportionate to the cardiovascular NNT. WE found a decline in CVR due to RF correction. In the high risk group, we can expect up to 14.75 (12.6; 16.06) added years of life at NNT = 3 (2; 3) due to therapy.

Therefore, high CVD RF prevalence persists among working age males. Prevention programs will allow avoiding CVD or CVD-caused deaths in 3.3 people in the total group (between 1.3 and 11.8 people) for 10 years per each 100 people. Long-term use of prevention to mitigate lifelong risk per each 100 people in the total group will make it possible to avoid cardiovascular events in 20 people (between 11.1 and 33.3 people) depending on a risk group.
